Born and raised in Yazoo City, Mississippi, Christy Barrett has an extensive background in news writing and reporting, working for many different publications such as The Yazoo Herald and The Star Herald where she earned several awards for her writings. After marrying and moving to Baton Rouge in 2004, she began crafting beaded jewelry just as a hobby but soon began to become more interested in wire and other forms of metal work. To fill her craving to learn more, she took some of the suggested leisure courses in textured materials at LSU, and the rest has taken off from there. She now owns and operates “Made in Louisiana Originals” which is shorthanded as “MNLA Originals” which has been her full time employment since 2013. Barrett handcrafts each piece from various metal sheets and wire and then incorporates different stones or pearls into her one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry, and she also uses acid etching and precious metal clay in some of her pieces. A member of the Louisiana Crafts Guild since 2015, she joined The Craftsmen's Guild of Mississippi in 2016, both of which, she says, were life goals.
