Opening Reception for Illuminated: Painted Feathers Exhibit
August 1 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
The Mississippi Craft Center will open a unique exhibition featuring the work of Craftsmen’s Guild member Elaine Maisel on August 1, on view until August 30 in the George Barry Gallery. “Illuminated” showcases a collection of nearly 40 of Elaine’s miniature paintings on real feathers inspired by the art in medieval illuminated manuscripts.
“Illuminated” kicks off with an opening reception on August 1st from 5-7PM at the Mississippi Craft Center, 950 Rice Road in Ridgeland. Come enjoy a beverage, meet the artist, and shop in the main gallery store of the Craft Center. On August 30th, the final day of the exhibit, Elaine will be demonstrating feather painting throughout the day at the Craft Center. The exhibit is open every day during business hours throughout the month of August. Works in the show will be available for purchase.
Maisel, a member of the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi, Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC) Roster artist and member of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, was selected last year represent Mississippi for the 94th annual National Christmas Tree display in Washington, D.C.
“I studied Medieval music notation in graduate school where I fell in love with the art and style in illuminated manuscripts. Before the invention of the printing press, monks copied important documents, like the Bible, by hand. They often snuck funny, bawdy, and political art into the margins. These weird, wonderful illuminations are the inspiration for the paintings I have created specifically for this exhibit,” said Maisel.
